March On Manhattan

Walking Manhattan, End To End

From Washington Heights To Battery Park

As the centerpiece of our 2016 sibling family reunion celebrating the looming 60th birthday of the youngest sib, the March on Manhattan proved a hit. The concept involved traversing the island of Manhattan along the long axis on foot. We all knew Manhattan well and relished the idea of experiencing the length of the island at 3 mph.

So it was on a brilliant Wednesday in mid-May, the clan rallied on the Broadway Bridge overlooking the murky waters of Spuyten Duyvil Creek (aka the Harlem River Shipping Channel) at the northern tip of Manhattan.

The fivesome quickly separated into the “chargers” and the “chuggers” but reunited in Central Park near the Dakota for lunch.

After seven hours and 17.4 miles, we arrived at Fort Clinton, Battery Park as the last of the day’s ferries from the Statue of Liberty moored along the seawall.

The plethora of sounds, smells, accents and eye candy we experienced was incredible. A world class urban hike and adventure!!
